The plot is from a 1960s novel by Elizabeth Spencer but is set in the 1950s, in the charming city of Florence.

The lead roles are played by West End debutants Renee Fleming, a Tony Award-nominee for her role in Carousel, and Dove Cameron of Disney Channel fame. Mother and daughter Margaret and Clara are in Florence for a vacation. Margaret is quite protective of her young daughter, owing to the fact that Clara was kicked in the head by a pony at the age of 12. As a result, her social and psychological development is slightly hampered. Clara, however, is absolutely nonchalant about this and refuses to let anything keep her down. As fate would have it, a gust of wind blows Clara’s hat into the hands of the spirited and handsome Fabrizio Naccarelli, and it's love at first sight for the couple.

Although Margaret is quite dissuasive of the match, the Naccarelli family immediately take a liking to Clara. Everyone, from Fabrizio's fiery sister-in-law to his big-hearted father and affable mother, approves of their relationship.
