Beneath the cliffs lies the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut on the West Bank of the Nile. This Temple is one of the "incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt”; It is one of the most characteristic temples in the whole of Egypt, due to its design and decorations. The Temple sits directly against a huge rock which forms a natural amphitheater around it so that the temple itself seems to grow from the living rock.

The Temple was built for the great Queen Hatshepsut (18th Dynasty), to commemorate her achievements and to serve as a funerary Temple for her, as well as a sanctuary of the God, Amon Ra.

Madinet Habu or the Mortuary Temple of Ramses III; Aside from its size and architectural and artistic importance, the temple is probably the best known as the source of the inscribed reliefs depicting the advent and defeat of the Sea Peoples during the reign of Ramses III
