Lopata Mountain is a beautiful peak in Skolivski Beskydy, one of the closest Carpathian ranges around Lviv. A walk to Lopata, with a relatively easy ascent and steep descent, is an enjoyable exercise for a day out. The peak used to be the epicenter of military clashes: one can still see the remains of WWI trenches there. Later, during the WWII, these fortifications were used by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in their victorious battle against the Nazi troops. On the Lopata walk, we will also see two interesting hydrological sites of the Lviv region: Kamyanka waterfall and Zhuravlyne Lake, also known as Dead Lake due to the high levels of hydrogen sulfide in the water.
Highlights
Kamyanka Waterfall — is a geological site of interest, located on Kamyanka river 550 m above the sea level. The waterfall was formed the crack of the mountain. The height of the cascade is almost 7 m. It is divided by rocky crags into two parts, the deep higher part, and the lower, shallower part.
Zhuravlyne Lake — (meaning Cranberry Lake), also known as Dead Lake, is a mountain lake with cold water. The lake has no fish in it due to the high amounts of hydrogen sulphide in the water, hence the name «Dead Lake». The surrounding wetlands are inhabited with rare plants, such as bog cranberry, or «zhuravlyna» in Ukrainian. That explains the second name, Zhuravlyne. Unfortunately, now this lake rapidly decreases in size, being overgrown with moss and sedge.
Lopata Mountain — (1211 m asl) is a mountain peak in the Skolivski Beskydy National Park. Lopata is located on the Zelemyanka range, 8 km to the south from Skole on the opposite side of the Parashka mountain, another popular touristic destination in the Skole vicinity. In the both world wars, Lopata Mountain was the arena of intense fighting. The fighters of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) are commemorated with a memorial cross atop the mountain.
The battle on Lopata Mountain — is a victorious UPA battle led by Vasyl Andrusyak (alias «Rizun») with the Nazi troops. The armed stand-off between UPA and joined German and Hungarian Wehrmacht divisions lasted 10 days, on 6-16 July, 1944, with the troops moving around Skole, Lopata Mountain, and Chorny Lis (Black Forest) near Kalush. The battle on the Lopata Mountain is one of the biggest UPA fights with the Nazi in the WWI.
Skolivski Beskydy is a mountain range in the Ukrainian Carpathians, a part of the Eastern Beskydy. It is located mostly on the territory of Lviv region and partially in Ivano-Frankivsk region. A historical town of Skole, which is a county center, is located approximately in the middle of the range, hence the name Skolivski Beskydy. Many local toponyms, such as Skole, Slavske, Opir, Parashka, are connected to the dramatic events in the turmoil history of Kyiv Rus, a medieval proto-Ukrainian state. Parts of this area, such as «Skolivski Beskydy» National Park, are protected territories. The range possesses many nature attractions, including Dovbuch cliffs, Kamyanets waterfall, Hurkalo waterfall, Dead Lake, and others.
