About The Tour
North of the Gran Via, the central avenue of Madrid, are two neighborhoods teeming with life and the panache of a revolutionary history. Chueca, as Madrid’s earliest and most well established LGBT+ neighborhood, is no stranger to revolution, while Malasaña is named after Manuela Malasaña, a young girl shot to death in the main square of the neighborhood during the uprising against the French in 1808. It was also home, in the years after the death of Franco in 1975, to the La Movida movement, which celebrated life and expanded the boundaries of freedom and the permissible.
The two neighborhoods share many similarities, but while Chueca has become the heart of night life and shopping in Madrid, Malasaña has preserved much of its alternative and artistic roots, expressed by the street art that is visible at every corner. Both neighborhoods feature as the backdrop for many of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s films.
During the course of the tour you will discover the stories of the city’s underground, taste a variety of incredible dishes, drink fine alcohol, and enjoy the vibe of these unique neighborhoods.
