About this activity

The Museo Picasso Málaga was inaugurated in 2003. The institution has since then become fundamental for an understanding of the rich development of local culture. The museum is both a landmark and a magnet, as well as a key symbolic referent for anyone living in the capital of the Costa del Sol. For those drawn to Málaga from all parts of the world by the talent and fame of the most important painter of the 20 th century, it is moreover an invitation to learn at close hand about the life and work of the locally born artist.

A visit is made all the more attractive by the architectural merits of the Palace of Buenavista, the building that houses the Foundation, whose vernacular heritage has not only been respectfully restored but also intelligently combined with contemporary architecture.

Located in the city's historic heart, very near the Cathedral and the Roman Theatre, the museum is open every day of the year. It shows temporary exhibitions and organises a variety of educational and cultural programmes.

With this combined ticktet, you can visit the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions.

  • Permanent collection

The permanent collection, devoted in its entirety to Picasso's work, comprises more than 200 paintings, sculptures, graphic works and ceramics created between 1882 and 1972. They embody the groundbreaking innovations that mark the artist’s career and the wide range of styles, materials and techniques he revolutionised.

  • Temporary exhibitions

Olga Picasso: From 26 February to 2 June 2019: the Museo Picasso Málaga presents Picasso's first wife Olga Khokhlova and her story. The exhibition came about from the letters and photographs found in the travel trunk of the Russian dancer, who was Bernard Ruiz-Picasso's grandmother, and it covers the years she and Picasso were together as a couple. It puts into perspective the creation of some of Picasso's greatest works, and reconstrues this body of work in the context of a personal story that developed alongside another, political and social, story. Approximately 350 items will be shown in the exhibition, including paintings, works on paper, photographs, letters, documents and films.

Bruce Nauman: From 18 June to 1 September 2019: "Bruce Nauman. Rooms, Bodies, Words" is an exhibition on a multimedia artist whose innovative work centres on his understanding of art as an activity or process, rather than as the production of objects. This is his first major exhibition in Spain for 25 years. Almost one hundred works will highlight the range of mediums with which this U.S. artist works: from architectural structures, sculptures, installations and neon lights, to videos, drawings, silk-screening and photography, amongst others.

Calder-Picasso: From 24 September 2019 to 2 February 2020: The first exhibition in Spain to explore the creative connections between two 20th-century modern masters: American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and Málaga-born Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). The exhibition is organized in partnership with the Calder Foundation New York and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA). It is a coproduction with the Musée national Picasso-Paris.
