Stop At: Somoto Canyon, Somoto Nicaragua

You will walk around the canon, followed by showering and swimming for short periods, and continue a 2 kilometers hike. You can jump in the water for a refreshing swim or continuing along the river, and appreciate its scenic beauty, the place allows various activities.

You can walk along a trail on the polished floor at the water’s edge and between high rock walls. You can also tour the canyon about 300 meters in small boats that the locals have arranged for easy access. For more entertainment, other activity is to travel the waterway on inflated truck tires, which visitors can use to water so floats. For active travelers, it is also possible to practice abseiling at some of the walls that reach up to 60 meters high. This technique harnesses vertical descent is one of the adventure sports possible here.

The canyon offers a unique environment in the country. When entering the place by the Solis Valley, which is frequently used, one can observe the panoramas of dry forest with small trees, as well as flora and fauna. Deers, parakeets, rabbits and iguanas are some of the species that inhabit the area.

As you get closer to the riverbeds of the Coco River, the path becomes sandy and one can see the streams that usually limit the access to low clearance vehicles. The topography starts changing until a single, huge wall that announces the beginning of the canyon. Between the small holes of the rock one can see orchids, bromeliads and cactus.

Keep in mind:

 The route from Managua to Somoto canon is 4 hours approximately one way and 4 hours back.

We recommend comfortable clothes, comfortable shoes, camera, swimwear, sunglasses, sunscreen, shoes and extra clothes to change.
