About this activity
We depart Mandalay which reigned in the late 19th Century via the world-renowned U Bein Bridge, the longest teak wood bridge in the world. Built in 1850 across Taungthaman Lake, the 1.2-kilometre bridge was constructed using teak wood taken from the deserted Ava palace. Still heavily used, we will cross the bridge with the locals and enjoy unobstructed views of the lake. The bridge takes us to Amarapura which twice reigned as the capital and stop for a visit at Mahagandayon Monastery, home to more than 1,200 monks. The monastery was established in 1914 to be a Buddhist teaching center and it remains so for the thousands of saffron-coloured robed monks. A daily sight here is them lining up patiently for their sole daily meal, an event that epitomizes their simple yet spiritually fulfilling lives.

As we cycle on we'll pass some impressive pagodas, the old city walls and also see why the town is known for its cotton and silk weaving industry. A country track takes us to the Ayeyarwady River. After crossing via the Inwa Bridge wearrive at Sagaing, which first rose to prominence in 1315. Although its glory was temporary the city holds its importance as a Buddhist centre with hundreds of pagodas and monasteries built on the hills parallel to the river. We climb up to the towering golden Soon Oo Ponya Shin pagoda, built in 1312 on Nag-pha Hill, and receives a steady flow of devout pilgrims. From here we have a spectacular panoramic view of the white pagodas that dot Sagaing Hills, the Ayeyarwady River, Mandalay, and Amarapura. We return to Mandalay in the late afternoon.
