About this activity
After having breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for an excursion around Mandalay, where you can discover the former capitals of Sagaing, Amarapura and Ava.

First, to reach Sagaing, you have to go across a bridge over the Irrawaddy River. Sagaing Hill, which is covered with 600 white-painted pagodas and monasteries, is home to 3,000 monks and 100 meditation centers and widely considered as the religious center of Myanmar. You will visit pagodas including: U Min ThoneSae and Swan OoPonNya Shin.

After that, you will take time to pay a visit to Sagaing’s local market, a typical Burmese market that attracts a few tourists. Here from locally made pottery, silver to other handicrafts, you can see a wide range of items for sale. You will also make a stop at a small pottery village, where you can witness the process of making the ubiquitous water pots which are easily found throughout Myanmar.

Next, you will keep on moving to the south of the city to Ava, the capital from the 14th to the 18th centuries, where you can be taken across the river to where your horse and carriage are waiting by a short ferry ride. You will explore the ancient wooden Bagaya Monastery and the remains of the Royal Palace and Fort. As traveling by horse and cart, you will not only visit some small villages located amid Ava’s ruins but also get a closer glimpse of local life in the Burmese countryside. Before returning to your car, you will stop for lunch in Ava.

And then, you will return toward the city and make a stop at Amarapura, a former capital whose name means ‘City of Immortality’. First, you will pay a visit to a silk weaving workshop. You will continue to U Bein Bridge, which was constructed of 984 teak posts once part of the deserted Inwa Palace and is 1.2 kilometers in length making it the world’s longest teak span, for a walk along this 200 year-old teak bridge after touring this tranquil site. While enjoying a stroll along the bridge, you can admire the fabulous views of the surrounding farms and streams.

Finally, late in the afternoon, you will return to Mandalay.
