About this activity
Not alone its size draws a crowd – being one of the largest lakes in the country and home of the Inthar, Inle Lake packs culture and nature all in one go. One of the Shan State most rewarding sights for travel afinados who are eager to explore all corners of this rich-in-vegetation lake, the region’s fertile grounds also draw farmers to its surface. Farmers have used the constant supply of fresh water as a means to cultivate a large variety of vegetables and crop in such a way that gives visitors new perspectives on observing organic agriculture. Season after season, the finest produce reach the outer corners of Myanmar and this labour-intensive means of crop cultivation forms the centre of this half day excursion. We follow in the footsteps of the farming communities of Inle Lake where floating gardens and sustainable techniques are used.

Your guide for the coming 4 hours will welcome you at your hotel along Inle Lake or at the nearby town of Nyaung Shwe. With water being the best way to get to Thei Lei Oo, one of these quaint little villages that still preserved a rural atmosphere, it lauds in the farming magnificence of what is to be expected. This farming community on the eastern shores is home to the famous Intha and the Pa O ethnic minorities whose lives evolve around fishing and farming. Disembark at the local boat pier and you will enter a world of vegetables, rice and flowers, all planted and harvested in an organic way. Depending on the season, tomatoes, sugar cane, cucumber, potatoes and a variety of beans are grown under the watchful eye of the village resident experts. During the winter months, the abundance of sugar cane, made in molasses, are used to create local rum, called Mandalay Rum with distillation of this alcoholic beverage taking place in Mandalay.

Easily the best way to see the growing crop from up close is by walking – customers will walk for approximately 1.5 – 2 hours to see all that is available at Thei Lei Oo. A dedicated trail will offer a complete view over all the cultivated land, going through the village and making maximum use of its picturesque location along Inle Lake. Void of western influences and offering produce of extraordinary quality, you will certainly enjoy this walking / boating half day. The tour ends with embarking your boat for a transfer back to your resort.
