El-Menara at sunset, April 2013 The name menara derives from the pavilion with its small green pyramid-shaped roof , meaning lighthouse. Although there is no actual lighthouse in the gardens, any building that sits at a high elevation is locally known as menara, such as the mosque Menaret manaara. The pavilion was built during the 16th century Saadi dynasty and renovated in 1869 by sultan Abderrahmane of Morocco, who used to stay here in summertime.
