About this activity
Departure by minivan from Bari to Matera.

Once in Matera, start the walking tour with the knowledgeable guide. Proceed towards Piazza Pastures to visit the Sasso Caveoso, where there are narrow streets and ancient neighbourhoods. Don't miss a visit to the House cave, typically decorated, and then climb on Mount Errone, where you can find the Churches of San Giovanni in Monterrone (11th century) and Madonna De Idris (13th century).

Visit the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, with its sober façade of the 17th century. To finish your walk you can visit one of the many craft workshops to learn about products of ceramic production of Matera.

At the end of the guided tour in the Sassi, the guide will allow you to do a tasting (very inviting) of typical products such as bread of Matera, garlic bread, bagels, pastries, wine.

I would not take this trip from Viator. The tour itself was fine, a little bit boring but the area is beautiful and something to see. We never had any wine or food tasting. The tasting was held in a very tiny room in the tour center I use that word loosely, as it's really 2 rooms, not a center. As we were getting on line for several small bowls of local items another tour entered and the room was now over full. It was hot and crowded and people were extremely pushy. Many walked in front of us. It was not what we paid for. The people who did receive food appeared to have a small 5 plate with a few items on it and a 4 oz glass of wine half filled. Not what I expected from Viator. I have used this company for years and it seems they might be slipping on their tours lately.

This is one of the best tours I've taken. Unfortunately it was raining for the first half of the day so it was a little slippery and the driver had a little difficulty getting from Bari to Matera but all turned out fine. I was a little nervous that I had missed him at the pickup point but after 3 phone calls to the agency found that he was stuck in traffic. Our guide in Matera was wonderful Stefania or Tania and very patient with our questions. She had wonderful insight into Matera and the life of the people prior to 1957. The Rock Church was amazing and so inspiring when you hear the history. There is such a feeling of tristesse surrounding Matera but what an amazing place.. I had read about a gelateria in Matera called I Vizi Degli Angeli and our driver was patient enough to let us go find it..... yummmmm don't miss it. It's in the middle of the Piazza by the cathedral.
