About this activity
Join our Silleteros Flower Farm Tour to learn about the history and events of the spectacular Fair of Flowers, the Feria de Flores, which takes place in Medellin each year in August. You will be taken to a place east of Medellin, to the municipality of Santa Elena, one of the principal location of the Silleteros. Silletero is the term used for men and women who create the beautiful silletas and carry them at the parade of the Feria de Flores, the Fair of Flowers, each year in August. We will visit three fincas, each different in their work and arrangements. First well learn about how the wooden framework called silleta, once a chair (silla in Spanish) to transport flowers and other goods to the city, nowadays is used to attach the colorful work of art of various flowers. By the size of the wooden framework we can imagine how heavy the silleta must be once loaded with numerous flowers. The silleteros will tell us about the four different categories of silletas as compared to the traditional ones in the first parade in 1957 today there are many other ideas about how to design the silletas, for example representing a logo of a product or expressing a social or cultural topic. On the next finca well visit a small museum packed with different items from the past, most belonging to the history of the silleteros, as well as other gems. We also get to hear stories about the process of creating the silletas during the days before the parade and can appreciate the prizes won for the design of the silletas. At a country restaurant near the finca we get to try atypical Paisa dish. Its called Paisa because people of Antioquia are called Paisas. Well finish our tour at a finca in higher terrain to get a marvelous view at the mountains beautifully placed behind the flowerbeds. Before we get back to the vivid city of Medellin lets enjoy an aromtica, a sweet herbal tea, listen to another story of the silletero and ask him everything wed like to know. Then we will be on our way back to Medellin.
