3-Day Melbourne to Adelaide Tour Including the Great Ocean Road

3 days
Multi-Day
About this activity
After pick up from your Melbourne city hotel or Federation Square, travel through the vast volcanic plains on route to Geelong where you have time to stroll along the beautifully transformed waterfront. The first stop along the coast is at Bells Beach, a famous surfing beach. The focus then turns to Australian native wildlife as you have the opportunity to observe Eastern Grey Kangaroos in the wild.

You'll then begin traveling the very scenic, cliff-hugging section of the Great Ocean Road. While winding along, stop to view the ‘Arch’ while your guide shares the story of this memorial road.

After lunch in Lorne, you'll stop at many scenic spots including Kennett River where you can see koalas and many colorful native birds in the wild. Take a 1-kilometer guided walk through a cool temperate rainforest gully to see the world’s tallest flowering plants and prehistoric plants. Your private self contained villa at Beacon Point Ocean View Villas is set high on a hill overlooking the Southern Ocean. A great place to relax and unwind. Dinner tonight is at the iconic Chris's Restaurant.

Day 2 starts with breakfast at Bay Leaf Cafe before a scenic drive through the Otway Ranges and onto the ‘Shipwreck Coast’. The first stop is at Castle Cove overlooking the Aire River valley. The 12 Apostles are Icons of Australia’s natural beauty. You'll arrive as the stacks are lit with the morning sun making them perfect for photos and crowd free. After hearing of the creation of the stacks and holding some of the limestone rock you can explore the boardwalks or brave a helicopter flight along the coastline (own expense). You'll then visit ‘Loch Ard Gorge’, the site of the most famous 19th century Australian shipwreck. While hearing the tale you will be able to see and hold some original artifacts from the ‘Loch Ard’.

Port Campbell is the lunch stop for today. After lunch, visit London Bridge, Bay of Islands and Bay of Martyrs. The journey then continues through Warrnambool and onto Tower Hill Game Reserve where you may have the chance to see koalas, kangaroos and emus. Continue through picturesque Port Fairy towards Mount Gambier, home of the ‘Blue’ crater lake. Check into your accommodation at ‘The Commodore’ in Mount Gambier where dinner and breakfast are included.

Day 3 starts with a drive through the Coonawarra wine region and a visit to the World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves National Park for a cave tour with a local guide. Continue through another South Australian wine region of Padthaway to Keith for lunch. Visit the very popular tourist village of Hahndorf and Mount Lofty summit for impressive, birds-eye views of Adelaide and surrounds. Arrive in the Adelaide at around 6pm where your tour ends.

This is a great tour. Pierre was our driver/guide,and he really made the whole trip very enjoyable. The van is comfortable, the stops well thought out and executed, and the two stopover hotels and meals are very good. Pierre made sure we saw kangaroos, koalas, and pointed out several species of birds along the way, including emus. You could no doubt rent a car and drive from Melbourne to Adelaide and save money, but if you want to relax, learn a little bit about the places along the way, and meet some neat people, this is the way to go! We did the trip in late February.

This had to be the best tour we had ever taken. We were contacted by our guide the day before confirming our pick up which was at the airbnb home we were renting. The company was so flexible in picking us up there so we did not have to worry about taking a cab to a central pick up point with our luggage. We were expecting a van with other couples but as it turned out we were the only people who signed up for the tour. The company honored our booking and did not cancel. We were pleasantly surprised. Our guide Jeremy was a very thoughtful generous man. The hotels we stayed at were very comfortable and the meals provided were the best meals we had our whole holiday. Excellent gourmet style food.He had a planned itinerary but was always asking if there was somewhere we would like to stop. The trip was well planned with stops spaced just right so we could get out and look around. Jeremy was a wealth of knowledge and had answers for most of the questions we had. We learned a lot of the history of the area and the country. Our stops were wonderful and my favorite was the Apostles on the great Ocean Road.We stopped and Jeremy waited for us while we went on a helicopter tour of the area, what spectacular scenery. We also made lots of local stops along the way getting to experience how people in the area lived. It was so much fun driving looking for Koalas, Kangaroos and Emus in the wild.We managed to see all of them as well as lots and lots of birds. We stopped at one national park and the emu in the parking lot came right up to our vehicle. There was so much scenery and information packed into the 3 days but we never felt rushed. It was a leisurely pace but we still managed to be at our destinations on time for a rest before dinner. Jeremy was very considerate and a very good communicator. The itinerary was well thought out and it had room to fit in other things as well. It was like taking a well planned family holiday with a tour guide commentary thrown in. We have already highly recommended this company to our friends who live in Brisbane. Loved Loved Loved this trip!!!!!
