MONTALBANO ELICONA
The territory of the island of Sicily is created by a mix of natural resources, seven UNESCO heritage sites, art, culture, literature, traditions, myths and a wonderful embrace of colours.
In this land you can find famous locations, known all over the world for their position and their history created during the centuries by numerous dominations who have left their print during the time.
But Sicily can offer more that it seems, it has hidden parts which can be discovered and appreciated if you are guided by who lives here. Montalbano Elicona is one of these places, with its monumental richness is a small but essential jewel of our island – and we wold be glad to guide you to discover sharing with you our love for our heritages.
We will start our adventure from Messina where our staff will welcome you and we will guide you along the Tyrrhenian coast describing you the villages that we will cross and the Aeolian Islands that you will be able to see from the bus during our way to Montalbano.
After almost 1 hour and 40 minutes we will reach our destination stopping in a local small cheese factory where the owners will receive us for quick tasting of the famous “provola di Montalbano”- a spun paste cheese made with cow milk. Once our short break will end we will continue with the visit of the village, having a relaxing walk on the tinny medieval streets, discovering important monuments such as the Church of Saint Catherin and the Church of Saint “Niccolò il vespro” and the stately castle -created as a defensive garrison on a pre-existing Arab-Byzantine fortress, in a territory crossed by ancient military and commercial routes.
At the end of our visit we will stop in a restaurant situated at the back of the castle of Montalbano where we will have the opportunity to taste typical products as local cheese, salami, sweets and also the wine of the house.
Our day-trip will end up with the return in Messina with a short stop in the panoramic point of the city from where you can admire the historical centre, the Ionian coast and the mainland.
