4 h
About this activity
You will visit Xochimilco, the floating gardens and find the colorful boat landscape that conquerors once called “the Venice of the new world”. But Xochimilco has not only inspired these romantic scenes, it is also an outstanding stage of biodiversity and green urbanism.

Your journey is a boat ride through the remnants of extraordinary Aztec hydraulic engineering that has been systematically destroyed for over 500 years. You'll travel through the touristic, the housing and the newly protected areas and learn about revitalizing projects, fauna, flora and much more while enjoying some local produce snacks.

Moreover, you will learn about a very peculiar specimen, the ambystoma mexicanum or ajolote and listen to some myths that shape local culture.

Excellent tour that combines socio-cultural depth, passion, curiosity and creativity. We walked around this amazing area and learned about how people have lived there historically, and how the community is dealing with economic, political and cultural changes that impact Mexico City today. We got to visit a working chinampa farm and learned about this ancient farming technique ,and then enjoyed a tranquil ride in a trajinera with some snacks. We even got to experience the trajinera lift that takes the boats from one canal to another! Heike is an engaging and personable guide who really cares about the communities she introduces to visitors. This experience is going to stay with me, and I look forward to more CDMX explorations with Hike a Hub on future visits.
