About this activity
Visit: Tours of Milan Private Tours, Milan, Lombardy
The tour begins at the main entrance to the Sforza Castle where you will meet with your Blue Badge Guide. Your guide will tell you a little about the tour and then you go to visit this magnificent fortress that was once home to two of Milan’s most famous families, the Visconti and Sforza. The castle is famous for its wonderful courtyards and in its time welcomed many great artists; Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo Da Vinci, to name but two, used to stroll through these very courtyards.
Opposite the castle is the delightful Sempione Park with its august arch of Peace. Take a little time to admire the wonderful architecture before strolling to the church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie.
Commissioned by Ludovico il Moro, the church was built in the 15th century as his family’s mausoleum. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the second to be granted such status in Italy. The reason for this accolade is of course Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous “Last Supper” that adorns the convent’s refectory walls.
This masterpiece has been restored and in order to preserve it only 30 people are allowed inside the refectory at any one time, at intervals of 30 minutes. This gives you the unique opportunity to get up close to a truly historic moment captured by the artist; the moment when Jesus attests “one of you will be false to me”. You can see the shock on the apostle’s faces as they look to each other trying to decide who will be the one to betray Christ.
This tour gives you a wonderful, not to be missed, opportunity; a visit to one of the least accessible wonders in Milan!
