About this activity
Dharavi Tour Many people know Dharavi as the 'largest slum in Asia,' but there is so much more to this historic area of Mumbai than poverty. Dharavi's industries have an annual turnover of approximately $665 million. On this tour, visitors experience a wide range of these activities: recycling, pottery-making, embroidery, bakery, soap factory, leather tanning, poppadom making, and much more. Most of these things are created in innovative ways and in very small spaces! The tour will begin by visiting a local recycling area where metal and plastic are delivered from all over the world to Dharavi to be recycled. Visitors will get to see the entire recycling process from sorting to the finished plastic pellets. After that, see a view you will never forget by visiting a factory rooftop and looking across the tin hutments that house so many human lives and stretch on as far as the eye can see. The tour will then continue to the local Community Centre, which is supported by funds from the tour. Visitors experience what matters most to Reality Tours... the men, women, and children who make this dynamic community one of the most vibrant places in Mumbai. Poppadom making is next, where visitors will get to watch the women of Dharavi make poppadoms, the essential appetizer of any Indian meal, by drying them in the sun on wooden baskets that are turned upside-down. The tour will then end with visiting a Kumbharwada pottery colony, where visitors will get to have the unique glimpse of artisans creating all types of pots out of unfired, sun-dried clay. When passing through the residential spaces, you will undoubtedly feel the sense of community spirit that exists in the area. People from all over India live in Dharavi, and this diversity is apparent in the temples, mosques, and churches that stand side by side. A tour through Dharavi's narrow alleys is quite an adventure, and you will leave with an enlightened sense of the purpose and determination that exists in the area. Please note: There is a no-photography policy for this tour and cameras are not allowed. This policy helps ensure that tours are done respectfully and that a strong relationship with the community is maintained.
