Stop At: Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, Pater-Roth-Str. 2A, 85221, Dachau, Bavaria Germany

Meet your guide at Munich Central Station or your centrally located Munich hotel, then take a train to Dachau where a bus will then transport you to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.

During the Third Reich, Dachau was referred to as the ‘parent camp,’ serving as a training ground for the genocide to follow. A staggering range of persecuted people were sent to Dachau — including communists, German dissidents, gay men, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jewish people and Polish citizens — upward of 200,000 people were imprisoned here.

Today the camp stands as a memorial site with many of its original features serving as reminders of a time in history that should never be forgotten. Explore the site with your guide, and see the gatehouse with its Arbeit macht frei (Work makes you free) gateway, bunker and the crematorium. You can also visit the administration headquarters and see the rail platform where prisoners once arrived.

As you walk around, listen to your guide give the background on each site, learning about victims and perpetrators whose names were linked to the camp. Heinrich Himmler helped set up Dachau, and used it as a place to train the SS ("black shirts") guards.

If there is something you would like to know more about, simply let your guide know. After exploring the camp, take some free time to browse the museum if you like, and then return by train to Munich Central Station.

Brandon provided a great tour to Dachau. Originally the tour was supposed to be for 3 of us but one person has mobility issues and decided that the public transportation to Dachau was too difficult for her to navigate. Of the two of us who were left, one person had been to Dachau before about 25 years ago. Even though she had been there before and had taught history in school, she thought that the presentation from Brandon provided a lot of new information and was well worth taking the tour.

We highly recommend this private tour to Dachau. Our tour guide, Achim, did an excellent job explaining the historical context of our visit to Dachau. He had incredible knowledge not only about Dachau, but overall perspective of the WWII era. We recommend a private tour for this visit since we left with better understanding and ability to ask more questions rather than a group tour.

Our guide Achim was excellent in providing knowledgeable, in-depth commentary during our time together. While it is difficult to absorb and witness the level of atrocity, it is important to confront, and more so to pay respects to those who suffered and lost their lives here.

Our tour guide was Gordon and he was fabulous! He was on time and met us at our hotel. We walked to the train station and boarded for a short trip. In the town of Dachau, we took a short bus ride. We are WW2 enthusiasts and asked Gordon many questions. He was very knowledgeable about the camp, WW2 and had also talked with survivors. Our tour went over the allotted time but we were all ok with it since it was so interesting!

Everyone who visits Munich should include this tour in their itinerary. A very important part of history. Couple it with a walking tour of the Third Reich. Brendan our tour guide was awesome. So knowledgeable and did a terrific job and setting the tone.

Our tour guide was great, and we really enjoyed his insight and wisdom during this tour. The tour is somber, and a very emotional experience, but I learned so much from this guide!

Great private tour with Mathew - learned a lot, very pleasant guide, allowed us opportunity to modify the tour as we went, but also kept us on time.

Our guide, Scott, was well-informed and extremely helpful. It is hard to describe this tour in words. We have all seen pictures from history books, but seeing it firsthand brings vivid clarity to the tragic experience of the prisoners. Good for teens to learn about the atrocities that were committed during this time period, but not recommended for smaller children.

Stephan was an excellent guide. He did a great job explaining the history leading up to Dachau and gave us a sense of why this time in history came to be. This tour is well worth the price considering we had the guide all to ourselves and could ask questions and interact. Highly recommended!

Our tour guide met us at our hotel and was very knowledgeable. We were there on a cloudy, drizzling day which enhanced the somber setting. We had 4 in our group and our guide was great at answering all of our questions. We really appreciated the individual attention.
