About this activity
This tour will allow you to interact with an expert Carnatic musician and enjoy a private performance.

The Southern states of the Indian subcontinent are known for their strong identification with and representation of, Dravidian culture. Here, Carnatic music is widely practised and it was in the 18th century that this school of music acquired its current form. This was the period which saw the "trinity" of Carnatic music as phenomenal musicians such as Thyagaraja, Shamashastri, and Muthuswami Dikshitar compiled their famous compositions.

In Carnatic music, there is a very highly developed theoretical system. It is usually performed by a group of musicians with a chief vocalist. Similar to Hindustani classical, Carnatic music bases itself on melody and rhythm, the Hindi words for which are Raga and Taal. The difference, however, is that Carnatic music is essentially devotional and uses percussion and musical instruments to support the vocalists. The accompanying musical instruments are the veena, mridangam, tanpura, ghatam, nadaswaram and the violin.
