About this activity

Depart Nagoya Station bright and early at 6:50 for the three and a half hour journey to Ogizawa Station in Omachi, where you will board the Kanden Tunnel Trolleybus all the way to Kurobe Dam Station in Tateyama. The 6.1km journey takes 16 minutes.

Step off the trolleybus and arrive at the Kurobe Dam, one of the largest dams in the world. At 186m high, 492m wide at the top and a reservoir capacity of approximately 200 million square meters, it is the tallest and largest hydroelectric dam in Japan, which consistently proves to be a highlight for many traversing the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Taking seven years to complete and requiring the manpower of 10 million people, be awestruck by the sheer scale of engineering that took place here between 1956 and 1963. You have over 2 hours to explore and learn about the dam.

The pinnacle of the trip is to witness the water release from the various viewing areas with the spectacular Tateyama mountain range in the background. Feel the mighty force of more than 10 tonnes of water discharging every second! If it is a clear day, you should be lucky enough to see a rainbow cutting across the gushing water to enhance the experience even further.

Take the trolleybus back to Ogizawa station and board the bus heading to Azumino, about an hour’s drive away. The city is in the stunning location at the foot of the Japanese Alps and is often populated with hikers and snow enthusiasts for the convenient access to the mountains. You will have some time here to shop and explore the wonderful city which is a melting pot of stunning mountain landscapes and cultural attractions.

The tour wraps up in Azumino and returns to Nagoya Station aiming for 20:30.
