Out of Africa Tour: Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum from Nairobi
4 h
About this activity
After hotel pickup in Nairobi, your tour starts with the drive to the Karen Blixen Museum, located 6 miles (10 km) from the city center. Now a museum, the farmhouse was Blixen's home and coffee plantation during her time in Kenya from the 1910s to the 1930s and belongs to a different period of time in Kenya's history. The site gained international fame with the release of the movie Out of Africa, an Oscar-winning film based on her memoir by the same title.
As you walk through the museum, you can see original furnishings and props from the film. The museum shop sells handicrafts, posters, postcards, the movie, books, and other Kenyan souvenirs. When your time here is up, continue to your second attraction, the nearby Giraffe Centre, officially the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (Kenya) Ltd.
First opened in response to the endangered status of the Rothschild's giraffe, the population of which had declined (reaching a low of 130 animals in the wild as a result of agricultural practices in their native habitat), the Giraffe Center offers you the chance to see the animals from an elevated viewing platform. To raise awareness, the center provides free environmental education to young Kenyans and promotes conservation efforts of endangered species in Kenya. Success of these efforts has increased the population of the Rothschild's giraffe to more than 500 individual giraffes in Kenya alone. The majority of your entrance fee to the center goes toward supporting the goals of the organization.
Your tour then ends with return to Nairobi for drop-off.
