About this activity
At the time of the dramatic eruption, Pompeii counted about 11.000 inhabitants, while Herculaneum had a population of some 5.000 people. A number of emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas in thesecities. One day, in 79 AD, several meters of ashes buried the whole areain a matter of few hours. Centuries later, in 1748, under the Bourbons government, excavation works started. The discovery was greeted with enthusiasm as it added great wealth to the kingdom and inspired the neoclassicism movement in Europe. Nowadays, the ruins of Pompeii are amongst the most visited archaeological sites in the world, while Herculaneum is renewed for its Villa dei Papiri which hosted a library of over 1800 papyruses.

Included in this tour there is a stop to a Cameos and Corals workshop, to learn more about this ancient art-craft, for which the Neapolitan school is still considered of great importance. Cameos in particular are carved sea shells representing scenes of mythological deities.

Lunch break to a local restaurant with a 3 course tourist menu, drinks not included.

I tried to walk to Hotel Naples, my meeting point. I got really, really lost. I fell down, because, I was trying to read the building numbers, and there was literally, a hole in the sidewalk. It was almost time to be at Hotel Naples, and I was now frantic, I was running late, I fell and cut both my knees and elbow and ripped my Capri's. Luckily, I stopped at a small hotel and a nice lady from Brazil, was using the same company. I was able to use the hotels internet, and I let the tour people, my name and where I was at. They told me to stay put, and MARCELLA, a tour guide, was coming to collect the lady from Brazil and her Mother. Francesco, the van driver, would take me with them, and switch me to the right tour bus. They, switched me and a few other people to our right tour buses. I can never say "THANK YOU" enough to Marcella and Francesco. Rosanna and Sicvada, were great in getting us all on and off of the bus. I really enjoyed having the tour guide at Pompeii and Herculaneum, I believe that was Rosanna. It was nice to hear the history of both places and to be able to ask questions. I felt that this tour was well worth the money. Plus, all of the above mentioned workers, "went above and beyond, to make my dream of seeing Pompei and Herculaneum". I will never forget their kindness.

An excellent tour of both sites and a highlight of our cruise - our guide was very knowledgeable and we managed to see a great deal in the few hours available - despite the horrendous crowds at Pompeii!

This was a whole day tour. We were picked up in front of a nearby hotel in Naples (the bus was a half hour late). Once we finally started the tour the guides were excellent. Our guide Stephaney was friendly and very knowledgeable. The included lunch was fine, but took almost an hour and a half. Except for a few logistical delays, the over-all tour was excellent and we are very pleased to have chosen this one and highly recommend it. We were only in Naples for only two days, the 1st spent at the excellent Museum of Archeology, a must to visit;. and the second day the visit to both Pompeii and Herculaneum.

I was picked up at hotel promptly.. then taken to another location where 4 different tour groups got on same large bus .. mass confusion.. who was going where and different tour guide for 4 different languages .. on way to Pompeii was told that I need to pay additional 15 euro for entrance ticket .. mass confusion again for people not showing up on time .. language groups divided.. Pompeii tour was excellent then another mass confusion people divided again and then split up to Herculaneum.. stopped for horrible lunch 2 hours waisted time then was told I need to pay for entrance fee to Herculaneum... tour of Herculaneum was amazing but tour guide had to explain in English and Italian so confusing and lots of distraction.. tour guide was excellent. Suggest doing a private tour . Much easier and less confusion... I was frustrated with having to pay more money for entrance fees and not being able to hear the tour guide in English .. very disappointed with service but I tipped the guide well ..she was great

Not a great start to the tour with the bus being over 30 minutes late, then sitting on bus while tour guides ran around talking to each other and not advising customers what was happening. On the drive to Pompeii the driver did not speak we had no guide on our transport they all seemed to be sitting together on big bus. Arrived Pompeii stood around wandering what was happening again nothing seemed organised. Finally got into Pompeii with a guide, would have preferred to have been left to wander on our on a been given a time to be back at bus. Only got to spend about a hour at Pompeii which was not long enough then rushed off to a local restaurant for lunch which I would have preferred to have missed and spent more time in Pompeii as that was the point of the tour. Again had to wait for bus to go to Herculaneum no communication from guides as to what was happening. Herculaneum was fantastic we just wandered off on our own, but again would have liked the guide to tell us what time the bus was leaving. Would not recommend this tour. Very very disappointed, especially when we had much better tours for the rest of our holiday with other tour operators.

Fantastic! Tour guide was knowledgeable, showed us all the wonderful parts of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The lunch was very good, waiters were excellent and made a fuss of my children. This was not rushed and we had 4 courses. Would recommend this tour for families as well as individuals. much enjoyed
