About this activity
Pompeii was a town that disappeared from the maps and from people’s memories as it got completely buried under the ashes erupted by the volcano in 79 AD. That dramatic day ended the lives of an entire bustling city to only come unearthed many centuries later. These ruins give an incredible picture of ancient romans’ daily life and their original urban setting: homes, shops, frescoes, thermal baths, mosaics and much more.

Included in this tour there is a stop to a Cameos and Corals workshop, to learn more about this ancient art-craft, for which the Neapolitan school is still considered of great importance. Cameos in particular are carved sea shells representing scenes of mythological deities.

Lunch to a local restaurant.

Continue this tour to the top of for a short hike to the volcano’s crater. The national park of Mt. Vesuvius is listed as UNESCO biosphere reserve and it is composed by the caldera of Mt. Somma and the Grand Cone of Mt. Vesuvius. In other words, a mountain into another mountain, aka the pre-existing one got its top blown away forming a new one. There is a long history of studies on the colonization of lava by vegetation throughout different epochs. The traditional agricultural areas are diverse in fruit, vines and flowers. It became sadly famous for its eruptions in 79 AD, the deadliest of recent history. Last eruption took place in 1944, in the middle of WWII and today it is considered a dormant volcano.

Mount Vesuvius was closed due to a landslide so it understanbly was cancelled, of course not their fault. They gave us alternative choice that was a trip to amalfi (which was so beautiful!). Pompeii was great but a bit messy at the begginnign, the rock show thingy felt like just advertising to the company and we wasted a lot of time there. Nothing to complain about pompeii itself, amazing trip and learned a lot there.Restaurant had very good food, got very surpised there. Good trip, worth the moneys.

All in all I think it was an average tour. The Pompeii part of the tour was ok, and operated along with a few other groups the operator runs a few different Pompeii other destination combos. We basically run through the motion just like most other tours you do in major sites in Italy. For the Mount Vesuvius part of the trip, we were told it was not doable due to windy conditions after arriving the Mountain and was left there for a 15 mins photo time. The operator did try to make up for it by taking us to a seaside lookout at Naples. But I thought the operator could have made some planning and offer some alternatives before we departed for the Mountain. We also overheard some of us speak Italian the operators talking about this issue in Pompeii amongst themselves, so I believe they knew the issue before. Net net I believe it was an average tour and could have been handled a lot better.

We booked a tour in Italian but guides had not been informed and were only organised for Eng and Spanish. They were nice and ended up making the tour in 3 languages. The visit to pompei is too short and too fast,in a hurry and we missed important point like the forum and amphitheatre.Vesúvio was good.
