Pompeii and Sorrento Small Group Tour from Naples
1 day
Small Group
About this activity
This tour begins at 9am at the Naples train station. An English-speaking guide will greet the small group and facilitate transfer to Pompeii via a short private coach ride. Once the group arrives at Pompeii, skip-the-line access ensures easy entry to the ancient ruins. An English-speaking Pompeii guide will lead a two-hour tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, once a thriving city that was buried under volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Commentary will explain how Romans lived during this time in history and highlight well-preserved fossils, frescoes, and mosaics that were buried beneath volcanic ash for centuries. An exclusive partnership also provides the unique opportunity to visit restored Domus, homes of the city's elite. The Pompeii portion of this tour finishes with a short coffee break and souvenir shopping.
The tour continues with a visit to Sorrento, a charming town overlooking the Bay of Naples. Along the journey, the guide will explain the history of the area, including its significance during the Roman Empire (Sorrento was a preferred location for Emperors' vacations). Views along the coastal road are a highlight of the tour; a handful of stops at preselected locations offer the chance to take photographs.
In Sorrento, the guide will provide tips (including restaurant recommendations) for the free time portion of the tour. The group will split up for lunch (not included) and exploring the narrow alleys of Sorrento. Shopping highlights include stores for hand-made sandals and artisanal food products. The town also has picturesque gardens. Once the group gathers again, the guide will lead the way to one of Sorrento's oldest shops for a taste of southern Italy's famous lemon liqueur, limoncello. The visit will include an introduction to how limoncello is produced and some secrets behind why the local ingredients make the drink so special. This tour includes a fair bit of exploring on foot, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
In the afternoon around 5:30pm, the tour will return to Naples.
