Herculaneum was a thriving, upscale community of Romans who appreciated art, architecture and fine furnishings. They enjoyed their spas and living by the beautiful Bay of Naples. On that fateful day, 60 feet of ash, toxic gases and rock wholly consumed their town in a pyroclastic surge.

Areas of interest include the House of the Mosaic Atrium, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and the House of the Deer. Continuing on our walk we will visit the Decumanus, the Palestra, the Basilica and the Thermal Baths of the Forum.

Interestingly, the homes’ wood structures and furnishings carbonized and today they appear as they did when they served their inhabitants. The airtight condition of the buildings contributed to the phenomenal preservation of their contents. On the walls you’ll see frescoes and mosaics that still bear traces of brilliant color, and attest to the classical culture of the period.
