About this activity
The Royal Palace, located in front the Saint Francesco di Paola Basilica while overlooking the beautiful Plebiscito square, is one of the most ancient buildings in Naples. It was actually designed in the beginning of the 17th century by the architect Domenico Fontana, to be the residence of the Spanish viceroy Pedro de Toledo. Over the centuries, its central building has been enlarged, and new wings have been added to suit the desires of the kings of Naples.
You will in fact face this yourself as you enter the Palace and walk on the marble stairs and pavements. As you glance at the magnificence of the baroque stucco and golden decorations, your tour leader will walk you through the myths and tales behind each sculpture and figure. Hall by hall, and room by room, you will hear the stories of the various domination and the Royal families, and you will see how they came to power and managed to rule this controversial country, as you witness the history before your eyes!
In our tour, you also will visit the Small Theatre, the Neoclassical parlor, the Hercules room, the small Palatine Chapel, and the Guards Room – where you can simply admire the acclaimed portrait of Maria Carolina di Savoia.
After our visit to the Royal Palace, we will move up to the Vomero Hill, to look at two magnificent buildings: the Saint Martin Certosa and the Saint Elmo’s Castle; both of which date back to the first French domination – as ancient as the second half of the XIII century. Although they were first built to be a fortified residence for the royal family, over the centuries they transformed into military fortresses, and these days, they host museums and offices.
Later, you will be escorted to the old castle corridors, and you will walk pass by the Church, the New Treasure Chapel, while our local guide helps you to explore the buildings' history in further details. In your tour, you will also see the masterpieces of Luca Giordano and Ribeira, and be impressed by the richness of the baroque style of the cloister.
If you join our morning tour, it is possible to visit the Nativities and Naval sections, while in the afternoon, you will have access to the rooms of the exhibition “Immagini e Memorie di Napoli”, where the famous Strozzi Table is kept! As a last touch to complete your once-in-a-lifetime adventure, you will enjoy the view of the Neapolitan landscape from any perspective and point of view from the Certosa terrace.
