Description:
Students will learn an easy-to-do, non-traditional method to make and finish off a knotted pearl necklace using silk cord. This non-traditional method does not require the use of tools. Topics covered: pros and cons of traditional vs. nontraditional pearl knotting techniques; how to buy and care for pearls; pearl knotting techniques; how to finish off a pearl knotted necklace using french wire bullion and using bead tips; how to make a continuous pearl knotted necklace (thus, without a clasp); how to add cord to your piece, so that you can make a longer necklace.
SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED:
This is a beginning, introductory class.
GOAL:
To teach how to hand-knot between beads using an anyone-can-do-it method which does not require the use of special tools.
PROJECTS/TASKS:
Make a 16 1/2 - 18" pearl knotted necklace
SKILLS LEARNED:
1. Learn to knot pearls using silk cord
2. Learn to attach a pearl clasp
3. Discuss adding gemstones, silver, crystals, or other accent beads to pearls
4. Learn how to finish off a pearl necklace
5. Learn when it is appropriate to knot a piece
SUPPLIES REQUIRED: Can be purchased prior to start of class, or bring your own. Cost apprx $20.
1 strand 8mm Swarovski glass pearls
1 card, Griffin Silk Beading Cord, Size #5 in matching or coordinating color
2 twisted wire needles, size FINE
Pearl clasp
Optional Supplies:
Student may want to purchase French Wire Bullion (Medium Size), clam shell bead tips
