Stop At: Chawri Bazaar, New Delhi India

There’s nothing quite like an experience on foot when you're exploring a market. With the freedom to take any path, a fascinating visual of vendors plying their trade, and not to forget, the screeching vendors and the sound of people’s footsteps as they walk through the bustling markets. In a world where e-commerce has transformed our carry bags to online carts, this experience gives you the opportunity to delve into the historical markets of Delhi.

Delhi is a beautiful city with its vibrant colours and rich heritage. The markets of Delhi are renowned throughout India, not only for the abundance and variety of wares available, but also for being one of the busiest and oldest markets in our country. With a passionate historian of Delhi by your side, walk through the bazaar as he paints a fascinating picture of the capital city’s past.

This three-hour history walk begins at 8:00 am in Chawri bazaar, the inception of which, dates back to the early 19th century. It is a wholesale market for commodities of brass, copper and paper products. For a delightful start to the morning, hop into a popular eatery and enjoy a traditional ‘Dilli’ breakfast of bedmi poori. There is no need to restrain from indulging, for a long walk lies ahead.

Visit the Jama Masjid and listen to the enlightening history behind this famous structure. An architectural wonder, this mosque was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century.

Also see the fireworks market, the streets of Dariba Kalan- the market where jewellers and perfume makers ply their trade, the lace makers market and the heritage enclave of Naughara. As you walk along, admire the old-world charm of these bazaars that still thrive, in our fast-paced modern world.

While the insightful guide will satisfy your hunger for knowledge, this history walk also has the perfect recipe for a happy stomach. Going though the ‘Parathe Wali Gali', feast on some delicious varieties of parathas- the famous Indian bread. To add a sweet touch to your walk, you can also taste some traditional Indian sweets like rabri and gazak.

As this thrilling walk comes to an end, you will surely leave enriched with the knowledge of Delhi’s historical markets and possibly a bag full of goodies!
