The origin of this museum goes back to the era shortly after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on the fateful afternoon of 30 January 1948, when the slow method of scouting, gathering and maintaining Gandhiji's private relics, manuscripts, books, publications and records, photographic and audio-visual material began in a museum about Gandhiji's life, philosophy and work.

On August 15, 1949, Shri R.C. Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India, opened the National Museum, New Delhi.
On December 18, 1960, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Vice President of India, officially opened the first stage of the National Museum construction. The second stage of the construction was finished in 1989. While the Museum continued to expand its collection through painstakingly sought-after donations, the Arts Purchase Committee gathered artifacts.

Still later, it was moved to the scenic old mansion at 5, Mansingh Road, in mid-1957.It was lastly introduced to its current new and permanent home, most suitably constructed in 1959 opposite Mahatma Gandhi's SAMADHI–India's most revered location of pilgrimage at Rajghat, New Delhi. On January 30, 1961, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President of India, officially opened the imposing two-story museum.Visit the local restaurant after completing your tour and enjoy your dinner.
