About this activity
The city of Delhi has no dearth of interesting sites to see, and WRJ Holidays has designed the best full-day tour of the city, for your convenience. Meet your private guide in your hotel lobby and begin your tour by heading straight to "the walled city?" Old Delhi. The city was formerly named Shahjahanabad, after the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Our first stop is The Raj Ghat; the final resting place of the 'Father of the Nation', Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi Samadhi is built on the banks of the Yamuna River, in an area surrounded by exotic trees and fountains. After paying homage to the Mahatma, we head to 'Purani Dilli's' most iconic landmark, the Red Fort. Commissioned by Shah Jahan, the 'Qila–e–Mubarak' was built over a period of 10 years from 1638-1648. The monument was built when Shah Jahan decided to shift his capital to Delhi from Agra. See the Diwan-i–Khaas and Rang Mahal on the fort premises. We then enjoy a local style, cycle-rickshaw ride on the city's narrow lanes, and take a purview of the vibrant markets, before heading to the grandest mosque in India, the Jama Masjid; another marvel of the Shah Jahan era. Did you know that the Mosque's western portion has a huge hall featuring 260 columns sculpted in Hindu and Jain architectural patterns? Our tour continues onward, as we drive through Delhi's modern day structures, such as Connaught Place, The Parliament and The President House, all the way to India Gate, the war memorial built to commemorate the sacrifices of Indian Jawans who lost their lives in the First World War. Next on our agenda, is the UNESCO World Heritage site, Humayun's Tomb! Broadly considered the inspiration behind the Taj Mahal, Humayun's tomb was commissioned by Haji Begum, Emperor Humayun's wife and queen consort. It is the first garden complex mausoleum in the Indian subcontinent with over 100 tombs on the complex. Our last stop for the day is the ‘Qutub Minar', the highest single tower in India. This gigantic 72m-high-tower was constructed under the Delhi Sultanate rulers Qutub-ud-din Aibak and his successor and son-in-law, Iltutmish, and is now, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a peek at India's oldest mosque Quwwat-ul-Islam and head to your hotel where your tour concludes.
