About this activity
We start at 9:30 am from the meeting point, Digamber Jain Lal Temple, opp. the main entrance of the Red Fort. Everyone is briefed about the history of the seven cities of Delhi, Old Delhi, kings & queens, British rule, India's independence, religions etc. The guide will be showing you rare pictures of the city along with the old maps. A detailed description is given about the Red Fort, the Jain Temple, Chandni Chowk Street and the Birds Hospital. All participants are handed a wireless audio headset with the help of which they can clearly listen to the live commentary given by the guide. The guide will also be giving the participants a bright batch which you need to put on your clothes. You can take this back as a souvenir and use it as a fridge magnet!
We start walking on the Chandni Chowk street and pass by the Shiva temple where the guide explains about the Hindu religion. We take a detour and visit ruins of Begum Shamroo Palace. We go inside a 350 year old Haveli (mansion) where the guide explains about Mughal Architecture and the layout of Havelis. We pass by the Christian Central Baptist Church. We stop outside the popular Sikh temple called Gurudwara Sis Ganj, where the guide explains about Sikhism.
We stop to sample the most popular foods like Jalebis (lovingly called the celebration sweet of India) and Kachoris ( a spicy snack made with flour with a filling of lentils and served with potato curry).
Now we go inside the narrow by-lanes to see the vibrant bazaars and colorful shops. It is a visual delight to see the shops selling wedding accessories, glittering borders, bangles, jewelry, bridal outfits, turbans, crystal boxes etc.
From this point onward, the focus of the route changes from the popular site seeing places to the hidden streets and narrow alleys. After seeing the hustle and bustle of the bazaars, we go inside the narrower and quiet residential streets to understand the culture, lifestyle and the living traditions of the old Delhi residents. It is interesting to see the intricately carved facades of the old houses, the ethnically dressed men & women and the small neighborhood shops and temples on the way.
We will be ending the tour at the Jama Masjid mosque. Your guide will be explaining you about the mosque along with old pictures. In case you want, you can visit the mosque from inside else, this point is the finishing point of the tour.
You will be free to interact with the guide and ask him any questions you have. Our guide will help you with finding you a cab, tuk tuk, metro station.
