Digamber Jain temple (10 minutes)

This is the oldest and best known Jain temple in Delhi that dates back to the 17th century. The temple also has an avian veterinary hospital.

Red Fort (1 hour)

The Red Fort was the main residence of the Mughal Emperors for nearly 200 years up to 1856. The fort was built by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. Precious marble structures were destroyed during the invasion of the Mughal Empire by Nadir Shah in 1747. More destruction followed at the hands of the British during the revolt of 1857 after which the fort was used as a garrison. The British put the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar on trial in this fort before exiling him to Rangoon in 1857. The historical significance of the Red Fort is underscored by the fact that to date it is used for hoisting the national flag on 15th August every year. That day marks the Indian Independence day.

Jama Masjid (30 minutes)

This 17th century mosque is the largest mosque of India and can accommodate more than 25000 people in its central courtyard. The mosque was built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan and was inaugurated by an Imam (priest) from Bukhara, in present day Uzbekistan.

Town Hall (5 minutes)

The Town Hall is an important landmark of Old Delhi. Built in 1863, it originally housed government offices, a library and a Club for Europeans only.

Begum Samru’s Palace (5 minutes)

This old palace belonged to the only Catholic ruler in India, who was also a woman. Begum Samru was a Muslim dancing girl from Kashmir who married a mercenary soldier of the British army and converted to Christianity. Gadodiya Palace (10 minutes)

This is an old palace from the times of the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan now in ruins.

Zeenat Mahal Palace (10 minutes)

Built for the youngest queen of the last Mughal Emperor of India, Bahadurshah Zafar, the palace was once the hotbed of rebellion against the British. It is said that the Queen herself opened the gates of the palace to the troops of the Indian Mutiny in 1857. The palace now lies in ruins but is an interesting spot to visit on this tour of old Delhi.

Khari Baoli (15 minutes)

Visit the largest spice market in Asia. Go past shops laden with colorful spices and take in the sights and smells of the market. The market remains closed on Sundays.

Chandni Chowk (15 minutes)

This is the oldest bazaar in Delhi and has shops that sell everything from groceries to electrical appliances. The narrow lanes of the bazaar are lined with old family homes. The shops are located at the ground level and families still reside on the upper floors. The market remains closed on Sundays.

Kinari bazaar (10 minutes)

This market specializes in wedding and traditional Indian outfits. You can catch a glimpse of the colorful bridal sarees and dresses as you go past the shops of this bazaar. The market remains closed on Sundays.

Dariba Kalan (15 minutes)

This is a 17th century bazaar that is home to some of the oldest silversmiths in India. Today the shops also sell costume jewellery. The market remains closed on Sundays.

Ballimaran (15 minutes)

The streets of this bazaar were home to the famous Urdu poet Ghalib. The shops here specialize in bangles and footwear. The market remains closed on Sundays.

Gauri Shanker Hindu Temple (10 minutes)

This is an 800 year old temple that is dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva and his divine consort, Parvati. The idols of Shiva and Parvati are covered with pure gold and are placed under a silver canopy.

Central Baptist Church (10 minutes)

The façade of this church, one of the oldest in North India, is a fine example of European architecture of its time. The church was established in 1814 by the Baptist Missionary Society of London.

Fatehpuri Mosque (10 minutes)

This 17th century mosque was built by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. The mosque is built in red sandstone and has a fluted dome.

Gurudwara Sis Ganj (15 minutes)

A Sikh temple, the Gurudwara was built in 1783 on the same spot where the ninth Sikh religious leader was beheaded on the orders of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam.
