About this activity
The colours and stories of Delhi are powerful and captivating. It has a history that fascinates all; the monuments stand testimony of how it had been invaded decade after decade, and how the city, rose again, like a phoenix from the ashes. Delhi now stands as an imposing metropolis, with the fortress amidst posh suburbs, tombs standing proudly beside traffic junctions.
Starting early at 7:00 am, this trail of two-and-a-half hours takes you to one such place of architectural finesse and tender memoir - the Humayun's tomb. This magnificent structure, who's inception dates back to the 16th century, is a befitting example of the rich Mughal architecture. But what is more fascinating is the story behind. The tomb was built by Humayun's wife, Bega Begum, to commemorate her love for her deceased husband. It is said that Empress Bega Begum was so grieved by the death of her husband, that she henceforth, dedicated her life to the building of this mausoleum.
Declared as a world heritage site by the UNESCO in 1993, the tomb of Humayun is a spectacular structure. The designs feature a strong influence of Indo-Islamic architecture, and according to historians, this was chalked out by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghyas. While the high arched shaped beams boast of a profound Persian influence; the lintels, corbel brackets, and kiosks speak of the strong Rajasthani influence.
The tomb houses four beautiful Persian- styled gardens called 'charbaghs.' As you walk, the multilingual guide would narrate stories of its fascinating history... of love and gallantry, power and pride. And do take your cameras along; for this place offers tourists and avid shutterbugs a myriad of options for photography.
"Through the battlefields, they rode their horses; conquering another's home. In the end, a piece of history remains, and their conspicuous sealed tombs."
