Stop At: Humayun's Tomb, Mathura Road Opp Nizamuddin Mosque, New Delhi 110013 India
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the tomb was built in 1570 and is the first garden tomb of the Indian subcontinent. The tomb was commissioned by Empress Bega Begum for her husband, the Mughal Emperor Humayun. The site was chosen because of its proximity to the tomb of Nizamuddin Auliya, a Sufi saint who was revered by the Mughals. The tomb is situated under a double domed structure in the middle of garden squares with pathways and water channels. The design of the tomb inspired several architectural innovations culminating in the Taj Mahal in Agra. Besides Humayun, over 150 later day Mughals are also buried here. The tomb complex combines Persian and Turkish styles of architecture.
Situated within the grounds of Humayun’s tomb is another architectural marvel, Isa Khan’s tomb. It is the tomb of Isa Khan Niyazi, an influential nobleman in the court of Sher Shah Suri. The tomb dates back to the 16th century. There is a mosque as well situated in the grounds of the octagonal tomb complex. Notable thing is that the tomb was built in the lifetime of Isa Khan. The octagonal tomb is embellished with canopies and glazed tiles. There are lattice screens in a deep verandah supported by pillars.
