Be More Chill
Jeremy is played by the immensely talented Will Roland, an ideal fit for the self-doubting and anxious character. Roland is well known for playing Jared in Dear Evan Hansen. With fantastic music by Joe Iconis and based on Ned Vizzini’s famous book, Be More Chill is a flawless reflection on the sheer energy and excitement of adolescence. The entire show revolves around the use of technology on-stage. A super computer that alters people’s brains, disguised as a drug that makes people popular, is the central plot device. The musical uses it to ridicule the far-reaching effects and the addiction of social media.
This tasteful blend of blinky modern technology and old fashioned compassion makes this show unforgettable. It is filled with highly relatable characters in a generic high-school setting, filled with lockers, bullies, kisses and at the centre of the narrative, a couple of friends who play video games and smoke marijuana.
The StoryJeremy Heere lives with his father in a skimpy household after his mother walked out. He has neither friends nor the confidence to approach his peers and befriend them. With nothing to do apart from binging on internet pornography and video games, Jeremy’s life is at its lowest point. When he is finally given an opportunity to be ‘cool’ and impress the girl he likes, he lunges at the chance without a second thought. Squip, a micro-computer, which teaches him all the right moves once swallowed, begins to take over Jeremy’s life. Little does the boy know that the computer is possessed by a dark angel.
