I was really looking forward to taking this tour. I was unfamiliar with the area in New York, having had just a few previous visits to Union Square, and I was particularly interested in the chance to go inside the Players Club near Gramercy Park. Our guide Elizabeth was wonderful, as excited and interested in the area and the Players Club as we were. On a beautiful day we walked along Union Square, looking at monuments, a vibrant farmers' market, some interesting art work and buildings. We spent the most time inside the Players Club, founded by the great American actor Edwin Booth. What a wonderful visit inside, especially for a theater buff! Lots of pictures of great actors who had been or are members of the club. Lots of wonderful Booth memorabilia...props including the crown he wore as Richard III, daggers he used in Hamlet, Macbeth, etc., costumes, paintings. Many wonderful rooms full of fabulous memories. At the top of the house you can visit the Booth room where he lived up to the time of his death. Paintings of other favorites like Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, James Cagney,Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, and many great theatre actors were lovely to see. When we finally left we did get to walk over to Gramercy Park, the last privately owned park in New York City and could see the wonderful statue of Edwin Booth in the park, accompanied by a great sight of the Chrysler Building in the background. We had a really wonderful tour, a great enthusiastic tour guide, and a very special morning walk and visit in New York.
