About this activity
Visit: Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, 12th Avenue & 46th Street Pier 86, New York City, NY 10036

Visit the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, located at Pier 86, West 46th St and 12th Avenue in New York City. Enjoy Priority Box Office Access by using the entrance marked Will Call/Advanced Sales.

See the Intrepid Air Craft Carrier, the Space Shuttle Pavilion, the Growler Submarine, plus watch an 8-minute film entitled 'the Story of Intrepid' and a 15-minute film called 'Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light.'

Launched in 1943, the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid fought in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. It was decommissioned in 1974, and today is berthed on the Hudson River as the centerpiece of the museum.

Intrepid Aircraft Carrier

The hangar deck is a great place to start a visit and the main indoor exhibit space, taking visitors through both the hardware and humanity of Intrepid. On the flight deck, get an up-close look at more than two dozen authentically restored aircrafts, look inside the restoration tent, and take a walk through history on Intrepid's island and bridges. The gallery deck, located between the flight deck and hangar deck, features the combat information center (CIC), squadron ready room, and marine berthing.

Check out the mess deck is where Intrepid's enlisted crew members ate their meals. The mess, or dining area, has been restored to its original appearance. The vibrant decor — complete with custom paint colors, colorful textiles and Western-themed props — is unique to Intrepid.

The Space Shuttle Pavilion

The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases the space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for the space shuttle program. Seventeen dynamic exhibit zones feature original artifacts, photographs, audio, and films that immerse visitors in the science and history of Enterprise and the space shuttle era.

Submarine Growler

The former USS Growler first opened at the Intrepid Museum in 1989 and is the only American guided missile submarine open to the public. Growler offers museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up inspection of the once 'top-secret' missile command center. Access is available to the various compartments as they were used during operations.

The kids really enjoyed the simulator ride, and it was cool to see a space shuttle. The elevator for the airplanes was interesting.

Great attractions , always wanted to go on Concorde, this was closest I will get. Very busy as it was fleet week but still managed to see all aircraft, the carrier, the enterprise shuttle and of course, Concorde.

Tour was very educational. It was interesting to see an actual space shuttle up close although you weren't allowed on board it.

This really was awesome. I'm not really a 'museum' type of person or tend to get bored quite easily, but this was fantastic. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
