Stop At: Balady Halal Foods

Balady is a Middle Eastern grocery store that carries spices, olives and pickles, dry goods, bulk nuts and dried fruit, packaged pita and baked goods, snacks, refrigerated and frozen products, and halal meat.
Balady also offers a selection of traditional baking and cooking equipment such as kabob skewers, mammoul cookie molds, Arabic coffee pots, special dishes for spreads like hummus and baba ganoush, and beautiful tea and coffee sets.

Stop At: Balady Home & Decor

This store, which specializes in cookware, hookahs, and home decor, is a new expansion of Balady, a Bay Ridge staple that offers a huge range of Middle Eastern groceries. Walking in is a transportative experience-- the smell of burning incense and array of beautiful pots and pipes evoke a marketplace in Lebanon. Look for inexpensive cookware, decorative boxes and cloths, or vessels for coffee and tea.

Hookahnuts is a Lebanese-owned shop focused on hookahs, specialty foods imported from Lebanon, and various kitchen items and gifts. Nuts are freshly roasted in the back, and the store is filled with the smells of cashews and almonds.

Stop At: Bay Root Meats

Bay Root specializes in a wide variety of Middle Eastern products. It carries many of the same items as Balady, including halal meats. The owner of Bay Root also has a second location directly across the street that focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables.

Stop At: Le Sajj

This atmospheric restaurant and hookah bar has been open for more than a decade, serving Middle Eastern comfort food and delicacies in a cozy, classy dining room lined with murals of Lebanon. Mezze like hummus, tabbouleh, and grape leaves start of many a meal there, and might be followed by roasted lamb with pine nuts or chicken shawarma. Another specialty is kibbe, which Le Sajj serves in various ways, including raw in a preparation called kibbe nayeh. An anchor of the local Lebanese community, Le Sajj is both a refuge from the bustling sidewalks of Bay Ridge and a relaxing spot to watch the neighborhood go by.
