Theater Tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art

1h30
About this activity
Visit: Show-Score, New York City, NY

On this incredible 90-minute tour, you’ll see the development of the theater art form as portrayed through visual art across history!

You’ll greet your fun tour guide in the museum’s “Great Hall”. You’ll proceed to the Greek wing to see some of the first-known statuette representations of actors! You’ll hear fascinating facts about Greek art (for example, all Greek statues were originally painted in bright colors) and Greek society’s views on theater in late 5th century B.C.

Next stop: the Baroque! You’ll learn how theater influenced visual art, making it more dramatic in color and content. You will hear about tenebrism (the juxtaposition of light and dark in art) and painter Caravaggio’s interesting past.

Then, in the Impressionism wing, you’ll see an unfinished drawing of a woman at the opera (donated to the Met by Richard Rodgers, himself!), hear the secrets behind Degas’ dancers, and learn the true story of Georges Seurat (which was NOT in Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George”).

Then you will see the larger than life painting of Picasso’s “The Actor” and one of Renoir’s final portraits, which happened to be of the original actress who played Eliza Doolittle in “Pygmalion” (which inspired “My Fair Lady”). The tour ends in the Modern Wing with Florine Steittheimer’s gorgeous “The Cathedrals of Broadway.”

This tour lasts 90 minutes, with extensive walking. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. Suitable for art lovers of all ages. Your ticket gives you full day access to all three Met Museums (on Fifth Avenue, the Met Breuer, and The Cloisters).
