Tour of Historic Hudson Theatre

About this activity
The Hudson Theatre has housed hit Broadway shows, like the 2017 revival of “Sunday in the Park with George” and “1984,” but it also has has a rich and eclectic history as an adult film theater, television studio, and venue where many greats--including the first female producer--got their start.

This tour begins in the lobby, where you will see the original 1903 marble box office and hear exciting stories about diva Ethel Barrymore (Drew Barrymore’s great aunt). You will get to see stunning images and original artifacts from the days when NBC owned the space.

Next, you will enter the Tiffany lobby to see the vintage Tiffany glass ceiling and learn how concessions at the Hudson are unique from any other Broadway house.

You will then get to marvel at the stage, where Helen Hayes, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jane Fonda have taken their bows, and see the meticulously crafted frescos and constellation lights that make up the stunning ceiling of the theater. You’ll also learn about the theater’s recent renovation and how the owners were able to preserve this historic building while creating a luxurious theatergoing experience for all audiences.

The men-only-smoking-room-turned-museum in the basement of the building reveals the history of the theater’s original owners. The couple were a prolific producing pair, until the husband perished on the Titanic leaving his wife to become the first female producer in America.

Finally, you will check out the brand-new Ambassador Lounge for VIP theatergoers. The lounge features more memorabilia from the theater’s past, incredible interior design, and neon signs in Jake Gyllenhaal’s handwriting. You will also learn about Broadway’s first show to feature an entirely black cast that included the soon-to-be-famous musician Louis Armstrong.

The tour lasts one hour and involves extensive walking. The building is wheelchair accessible.
