Lindau Private Walking Tour

1h30
About this activity
Start your tour in front of the Mangturm, on the promenade. Learn about one of the most famous still standing watchtowers of the old medieval fortification belt. If you want to enjoy a nice panoramic view, climb the 89 steps to the top. In the background, admire the entrance to the port, with its two main landmarks: on one side the new Lighthouse and on the other one a huge 6 meter high and 50 tons sitting Lion, guarding the entrance. Continue your tour to The Thieves Tower. Listen to its fascinating story and learn how it received its nickname. In the vicinity, you will get a chance to see the “Fools Fountain”, with its interesting figures, each wearing masks worn by Lindau's guild of carnival fools. Every year, on a certain date the fools take over the government of their towns and villages. Many processions with all kinds of characters, make their way through the streets during this time. Follow the cobble stone lanes, while gazing at the different architecture of the old buildings and the many murals to reach Maximilian Street. The houses along here belonged to the noble families of Lindau. This street was the seat of the guilds and the trade center. If you happen to know guild names then you will notice the streets are named after them. Not far you will stop for one of the main attractions of Lindau: the Old Town Hall. Admire the breathtaking murals on the facade, one of them depicting moment when Emperor Maximilian I held a deliberation here in 1496. Learn from your guide how one mural started a huge erotic scandal and what happened to it. Make sure not to miss the Haus Zum Cavazzen. and its facade completely painted with mythological figures. Today the house is center of the Museum of local history. Proceed through the narrow streets of the old town until you reach the Saint Stephan, Evangelical Church. Next to it, visit the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady, also known as St. Mary's or Collegiate Church. The inside is richly decorated with white stucco, many beautiful frescoes and carvings in the Rococo style. If you like Baroque work, then you will love this Church!
