About this activity
Located in Oakland, California, Chabot Space & Science Center is an 86,000-square-foot hands-on museum featuring interactive exhibits, space related artifacts, a digital planetarium with shows that explore the universe and life on earth, a large screen theater, hands-on activities and three powerful telescopes. Chabot Space & Science Center has become the Bay Area's go to destination for visitors of all ages who want to discover and learn about space and earth sciences.

Set on 13-acres amid beautiful redwood parkland in the hills above Oakland, guests can hike through nearby trails or join hikes led by a Chabot educator which feature discussions about the natural environment and objects in the sky.

Chabot is home to three magnificent telescopes, Leah, Rachel and Nellie, which are open to the public. Leah, an 8" refractor telescope, was built in 1883 by Alvan Clark and donated by Anthony Chabot. Rachel, a 20" refractor telescope, is the largest refractor in the western United States. Nellie is a 36" reflecting telescope which opened in June 2003 and is housed in a rolling roof observatory. Visitors of all ages can experience for themselves the wonders of the cosmos as they gaze through the telescopes at distant stars and planets.

We hope you will be inspired by what you discover and experience here, and leave with new questions in your mind and new ideas stirring your imagination.
