Oxford and Cambridge University Day Tour

1 day
About this activity
Oxford

The morning starts with a comprehensive tour of Oxford University and the city of Oxford, collection from both central Oxford hotels and Oxford train station is included in this experience. With a tour guide who has studied or taught at Oxford University, you will be given a truly unique insight into the world famous University.

The sites visited are in furtherance of this excellent experience, from the Bodleian Library (home to such books as the first complete folio of Shakespeare's work, along with the Magna Carta and rare illustrations done by Tolkien), to one of the most beautiful colleges at Oxford University. Standing in the same locations as Lewis Carol and C S Lewis would have stood, presents a great opportunity to hear not only about the famous academics who taught at Oxford, but also the influential writers who have defined entire genres.

While moving between these locations your guide will be able to describe their own experiences of tutor sessions, degree ceremonies - of course along with those eccentric traditions which are just as important!

 Cambridge

Heading over to the dark side...we have actually been providing daily walking tours of Cambridge, for as long as we have Oxford. The close links between the two have spawned the common phrase Oxbridge. As you would expect this is due to not just a fierce rivalry, but also a academic system which finds itself tethered to the other.

On arrival to Cambridge we will explore the main highlights of the University, including the Corpus Clock, The Backs and general student life at Cambridge University, with reference to the earlier days experiences to help convey the difference but also where the two Universities diverge. One crucial area of this is science; the tour will cover it's solidification as in the mind-set of Cambridge, with such influential discoveries as DNA and the work of another famous scientist, Stephen Hawking.

The tour will then head into King's College. Often described as "a chapel with a college attached to the side", Kings College Chapel is without a doubt one of the crown in the jewels of Cambridge University. On completion it represented a symbol of unification for England, with rare marking denoting the (short) marriage of Henry VII and Anne Berlin. Home to the famous Christmas Eve broadcast and art of national importance, this is a site not to mixed - with entrance including in the price of your ticket.

The tour will then return back to central Oxford and Oxford train station for 5pm.
