Segesta Erice and Salt Pans Full Day Excursion

About this activity
This itinerary is always popular with clients from all over the world. It is a stress-free day that gives you a little idea of Sicily in just one day.

Visit three different sites: Segesta, an archaeological site; Nubia and the Salt Pans in Trapani, that show you the Sicilian coast with its beautiful landscape and nature; and Erice, a Medieval town. The road is really pretty with unforgettable views from the old street going up from Trapani to mount Erice (old monte San Giuliano). All three sites are not far from Palermo. Thanks to this day trip, you have more time to explore all sites. This itinerary is also named "the Elimian's Road," because the Elimians are one of the first inhabitants of this zone in Sicily. The ancient Greek name of Erice was Eryx (Έρυξ in Greek), and its foundation was associated with the eponymous Greek hero Eryx. It was not a Greek colony, as the Phoenicians founded it, but was largely Hellenized. It was destroyed in the First Punic War by the Carthaginians, and from then on declined in importance.Eryx was conquered by Aghlebids in 831 and was renamed as Cebel Hamid (In Western sources Gebel Hamed, meaning Mountain of Hamid). It was ruled by Arabs until the Norman conquest. In 1167 the Normans renamed it Monte San Giuliano. It was known as Monte San Giuliano until 1934.

Excellent tour from Palermo to see the Segesta ruins and Erice. Wish the Erice stay was longer, although there was enough time to have a sit-down lunch and walk through and shop. If you ask me, the salt pan trip was unnecessary----just have a good visit to Segesta in the morning, and a longer stay in Erice, since there's more to see, do, and eat there. Nevertheless, a great value for money as a day trip from Palermo.

The visit to Segeste and Erice was great. In contrast, the visit to the salt pans was interesting, but not worth the drive to the place. Our tour leader was Michael and he provided us with an excellent background of the history of the places we visited.

The Salt Pans aren't really worth the effort to see but Segesta and Erice were fantastic. Michael was our driver/guide and he was very professional and knowledgeable. It was a small group and we quickly became friends. It's a nice way to spend the day outside the madness that can be Palermo.

Driver on time to pick us up. Very pleasant and helpful. Good driver. Van comfortable. Small group. Surprised that we had to pay for our own entrances and that there was no guide. We paid about 50 each which was expensive. In other countries we have had guides with us as well as a driver! Reluctant to purchase another trip because of lack of a guide.

We liked very much this tour. This is a tour that takes you to different places and give you the freedom to look at them by yourself. Our guide was great, very nice and an excellent driver. We recommend this tour to people who likes to be independent when they travel.

Michael was very knowledgeable and friendly, and gave us tips before leaving us off in the various towns. We especially enjoyed Erice and its arancini. Try the one just after the gate on the left, unfortunately, they were out of Nutella ones but the ragù and also the spinach and mozzarella were very tasty!

If you are also going to do the Agrigento tour then I suggest you do this tour first.

This is essentially a self-guided tour. You are provided with transportation and a brief explanation of what you should do and see. The driver was excellent - very courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. If you have already been to Agrigento, you really don't need to see Segesta, unless you are an avid follower of Greek ruins. The salt plans of Trapani are absolutely amazing. I have never seen anything like it before - looks like snow. Erice is a quaint, amazing little town. The views mountains and the sea are stunning - some of the best vistas I have ever viewed. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day.
