Why You Shouldn't Miss This

The silhouette of Mont Saint Michel sitting on the bay that surrounds it is easily one of the most recognizable images, having protected itself against the wrath of nature as well as the ravages of war over the course of over a thousand years. Legend has it that the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to the Bishop of Avranches and instructed him to build a church on the little island. Over the centuries, the island was fortified and came to serve as a strategic military point, having been under siege for 30 years during the Hundred Years' War, and playing a prison during the French Revolution. Today, it is a one of the most visited sites in France, receiving approximately 3 million visitors a year, not only for its monuments but also for the unique tidal phenomena that at low tide permits walking across the bay to reach the commune on foot, and at high tide can leave the island temporarily cut off from the mainland.

Your Experience

A rocky islet rising above the tides, a monastery perched atop with its spire rising into the sky and forming the tip of a pyramid that begins in solid fortress walls that have held out through their share of wars: This is Le Mont Saint-Michel. Located an hour away from Rennes and three hours away from Paris (by car), the flat plain that surrounds it allows you a glimpse of the imposing Mount long before you set foot on the rock. From the mainland you can reach the commune by foot or by the shuttle bus.

Once at the walls, the walk up through the narrow medieval streets is an experience in itself, although the jewel of Le Mont Saint-Michel is undoubtedly its Benedictine monastery. Walk through it's stone hallways, like many people before you have done over the centuries and admire the serene atmosphere. Admire the cloisters and the quiet gardens as you walk around. You'll have little to no trouble finding your way with the help of your guidebook. Look out for the “Merveille” - the gothic monks quarters and a marvel of 13th century architecture. You can also enjoy views of the sea and the tides from the fortified walls and discover more about the history of the island in its various museums.
