About this activity

In 2001, fascinated by the ancient and almost mystical Region of Umbria and by a wine of extraordinary power and longevity like Sagrantino, the Lunelli family purchased Tenuta Castelbuono, an estate with 30 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Bevagna and Montefalco. Their efforts were initially concentrated on the vineyards, which have now been converted to organic methods.

Carapace experience includes a guided winery tour and three wine tastings:

CARAPACE – MONTEFALCO SAGRANTINO DOCG

Grapes
100% Sagrantino obtained from the best vineyards of the Estate, harvested by hand in October.

A typical expression of a grape variety that is absolutely unique in terms of power and longevity, the Sagrantino from Tenuta Castelbuono amazes one with its mellowness, which results from skilful vineyard husbandry and long ageing in large oak casks.

ZIGGURAT - MONTEFALCO ROSSO D.O.C.

Grapes
70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Cabernet and Merlot, harvested by hand in September and October.

A combination of the power of Sagrantino and the elegance of Sangiovese, the Montefalco Rosso from Tenuta Castelbuono expresses all the charm of a region with an age-old winemaking tradition.
A brilliant ruby red in colour.

LAMPANTE - MONTEFALCO ROSSO RISERVA DOC

This first release of the Estate’s Montefalco Riserva comes from specially selected grapes from the “Le Fonti” vineyard at Bevagna. It is a wine of great structure and elegance whose long maturation takes place in the heart of the Carapace, the Lunelli family’s winery-cum-sculpture in Umbria.
A splendid ruby red with garnet tinges.

PASSITO - MONTEFALCO SAGRANTINO D.O.C.G.

Grapes

100% Sagrantino obtained from the best vineyards of the Estate, harvested by hand in September.

A “wine for meditation”, made by semi-drying Sagrantino grapes on racks, it is characterized by the fine, elegant concentration of aromas and flavours that are typical of the variety.
This is the traditional version of Montefalco Sagrantino, once only vinified as a sweet wine for use in religious ceremonies, to which it probably owes its name.
