About this activity
Appreciate the history of New Zealand’s whaling culture with a tour of the National Whaling Center, the Perano Whaling Station and the Picton Whaling Museum

This historical whaling tour is one of the best things to do when you’re in Marlborough. Start the day with a comprehensive tour at New Zealand’s National Whaling Center. There, you will learn about the history of whaling in New Zealand which lasted from 1827-1964. When you’re done, take the cruise to Perano Whaling Station for a more in depth experience. On the way, you might even get a chance to see some dolphins and killer whales frolicking in the ocean. At the Perano Whaling Station, get a chance to touch some of the machinery the whalers used, and even have a chance to live like a whaler and throw a harpoon into a (fake) target, or sharpen your hunting knives. There, you can catch a quick audio visual presentation about the lives of the whalers to discover how they lived back in the day. Finally, once you disembark at Picton you can choose to walk to the Picton Whaling Museum and view over hundreds of carefully preserved whaling artifacts. If you’re lucky, you might even get to meet and get first hand stories from one of the whalers who lived and worked during the whaling era. And if you’re worried about the state of the whales and other marine mammals today, New Zealand has a Marine Mammal Protection that has been put into place since 1992, so you’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about! Just enjoy this informative tour of one of New Zealand’s historical eras.
