Super Tuscan wine tasting and food delicacies at Varramista
Fattoria Varramista is a wine producer with a century-old history and prestigious wine cellar, located in Montopoli Val d'Arno right in the middle between Florence, Lucca, Pisa and Livorno.
Vines have been grown on the estate for centuries: back when Varramista belonged to the Capponi Counts an excellent Sangiovese wine was already being made. However, only in the 1990s and through Enrico Piaggio's nephew, Giovanni Alberto Agnelli, began a reconversion of the vineyards and cultivation system, under the guidance of Federico Staderini, the enologist who still looks after the project today.
Syrah is the company's main grape here, along with other some international vine species and the estate's historic Sangiovese.
The tour starts at Varramista's cellars: the Tinaia (vat cellar), refurbished in the '90s and where the wines are made and at the Barricaia (barrique cellar), built at the same time as the Villa and where the refining in wood barrels takes place - a characteristic of all the red wines made at the Fattoria Varramista.
The tour ends with wine tasting of three red wines: Varramista 100% Syrah; Frasca, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah; Ottopioppi, a blend of Sangiovese and Grenache.
The wines are accompanied with cold Tuscan meats and pecorino cheese, Tuscan extra virgin olive oil, fresh bread, almond biscuits and a spirit.
