About this activity
Complete your stay on the Yucatan Peninsula with the Light and Sound Show at Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The newly revamped show allows you to experience the site’s architectural wonders and mythological lore in a way that most visitors have not.
With hotel pickup, arrive at Chichen Itza about 3.5 hours later. Bring along snacks and drinks for the ride and then dig into a sumptuous buffet lunch upon arrival.
Then, follow a certified archaeologist on a 1.5-hour tour of Chichen Itza, considered today one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Stroll past key landmarks, including the observatory and El Castillo, where you'll be seeing the show. Also known as Kukulcán Pyramid, El Castillo contains 365 steps for every day of the solar year. Learn about the city during its glory days, from around 600 to 1200 AD, and how it served as a pilgrimage site until the arrival of the Spanish.
Following your tour, you have free time to explore on your own and then your guide leads you to your seats for the Light and Sound Show. Dressed with dramatic lighting and set to haunting music, the show transforms 1,500-year-old temples into ever-changing canvases with 3D images of ancient Mayans moving across the structures.
Witness warriors play deadly games in the ball court, and the famous snake-shadow wriggle from the pyramid apex to the ground, an uncommon occurrence visible only during a spring or autumn equinox with clear skies.
Revel in this unique glimpse into Mayan culture and the discovery of Chichen Itza for about 20 minutes. After the show ends, board your minivan for the return drive to your Playa del Carmen hotel.
