About this activity
Arrive at Pompeii and skip the lines meet one of our expert English-speaking guides. As you walk through the shops, temples, public baths, and houses that composed the thriving city, your guide will recount the fascinating stories of ancient life and how it was decimated by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

See how people lived nearly 2,000 years ago with stops at a Roman bakery, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Forum, an ancient supermarket, an old cemetery, and a theater. The tour will also visit the touching and eerie plaster death casts of a few of the unfortunate people caught in the eruption. If appropriate for the group, you’ll also step into an ancient brothel.

The walk is capped off with a stroll along the city walls offering panoramic views of Naples and Capri.

With a group of 15 people or fewer you won’t ever struggle to hear your guide, and you will have plenty of time and access to ask all the questions you’re going to have about ancient life in this incredibly well-preserved city. Our expert Pompeii guides have dedicated their lives to the study of this city and there are no better people to introduce you to this jewel of world heritage.

Our friendly guide spoke English well and was just wonderful. The site is amazing, of course, but she brought it to life.

Pompeii is so huge with so much to see that the 2 hour tours just would not be enough. Even in 3 hours with an expert guide we only seemed to scratch the surface, but Hilary’s passion and authenticity brought everything to life. She truly loves this place. I had no idea we would see and learn so much. Totally incredible and a highlight of our 3 weeks touring Italy.

This tour did not disappoint! There were 8 of us in total and our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. We had no trouble finding the meeting place - we just used Google maps and followed the instructions in our confirmation email. It was extremely hot weather and our guide tried to keep us in what little shade there was. It did not feel too crowded compared to say the Vatican tour. I would recommend this tour to others.

tour was great, hot day, loved the guide but Viator did not provide us with the meeting point!!! It would be great for you to be a bit more specific on meeting place. Thanks

We were Here during a heatwave but we really had a great time. The tour was very informative and the tour guide very conscientious of the heat how much water we are getting and the areas where we were walking. We learned some new information that we never knew!

We were met by Sonia who took a small group of 14 around the ruins at Pompeii. She explained everything in great detail and took time in answering any questions anyone had. Thank you Sonia, we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour tour.

This tour was exactly what we were hoping it would be. One reason we picked this tour is because it was 3 hours. Many of the tours we looked at were only 2 hours, and we didn't think that was enough time to see as much of Pompeii as we wanted. It turned out we were right. The 3 hours flew by and we still didn't see everything. The tour ended at 1:30, and we ended up staying until 4:30 on our own. We also picked this tour because it had a 10:30 start time allowing us plenty of time to travel from Rome that morning. Our tour guide, Francesca, was fantastic. She didn't stop talking for the entire 3 hours, and I mean that in the most positive way. She's trained as an archaeologist and was extremely knowledgeable about not only the Pompeii ruins but about the history of the area and its people as well. She didn't waste any time and we saw a lot in the 3 hours we were with her. The headsets provided worked perfectly and we could hear everything very clearly. We went on tours of the Vatican and the Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine Hill, and this tour was easily the best. The others were good, but this one was a level above, and that was due in large part to Francesca, her knowledge and her ability to present it in a way that was interesting, engaging and easy to understand. And we feel this way in spite of the fact it was brutally hot - 96 degrees the day of our visit. Fortunately, there are fountains scattered throughout the ruins and Francesca made sure we all had time to fill our water bottles whenever we passed one (be sure to take a bottle with you that you can fill). I would highly recommend this tour to anyone thinking of booking a tour to see the Pompeii ruins. Unless you are short on time or just aren't that interested in Pompeii, then you need at least 3 hours. And with this tour, you get to see a lot in the 3 hours you have. Note that this tour didn't visit the House of the Faun, the Amphitheater or the House of Giulia Felice - three things that are definitely worth seeing. The Amphitheater and the House of Giulia Felice are at the far end of Pompeii so it's easy to understand why they weren't included. But since we had already planned to stay on our own anyway, it worked out perfectly for us as they were easy to locate on our own. If you're thinking about booking a tour of Pompeii, this is an excellent choice!

Absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Touring Pompeii seemed a bit daunting - so much to see and I'm so glad that I decided to book this tour the night before. Ilaria was our guide and she was amazing an archeologist, no less! She had us enraptured with stories, history, archeology, culture and more. The tour was an excellent value, many of us chatted afterwards and agreed that the three hours went by fast. What a special treat and I'll definitely look for other walks of Italy/New York/Paris/Turkey in future, and in particular Ilaria.
